Pretoria, (part of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality ) is located in the northern part of Gauteng Province,and is one of South Africa's three capital cities, serving as the executive (administrative) capital (the others being Cape Town, the legislative capital, and Bloemfontein, the judicial capital). An official committee on 2005-05-26 approved changing the name (in official use) of Pretoria to Tshwane, which is already the name of the Metropolitan Municipality [1] in which Pretoria is located; but this change had not yet been approved as of 2005 by the central government.

Pretoria is one of South Africa's leading academic cities, and it is home to both the largest residential university in the country (the University of Pretoria) and the largest distance education university (the University of South Africa, more commonly known by its initials, UNISA). The South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is also located in this city.
